Samsung BD-P2550 1080p Blu-ray Disc Player

My husband bought this player two days ago, along with several expensive blu ray movies. Tried to watch movies yesterday, but the device freezes up in the middle of the movie. Called Samsung customer support who informed us we would need to download an upgrade. Kind of a hassle, in my opinion. I just want to watch movies. I’d take it back, but we already have opened several movies and won’t be able to return those.
Actually I had two choices — I could buy this Samsung or I could buy a LG Blue-ray player– if I wanted to stream (download) Netflix’s offerings to our TV set and play CD’s or DVD’s. That was my main reason for buying something new to us.
As it turned out, I got a lemon. There was no way I was going to connect to Netflix with this one.
Potential buyers should take heed from my experiences:
1. Calling Samsung’s toll-free tele. number may mean speaking to someone in the Philippines.
2. When I called Samsung (the 1st time) I was told I needed an RF modulator. Fine. I got one, but it did nothing. I still could not connect to Netflix.
So being at a dead end, I waited till a techie (my son) came by for a visit.
As it turned out —
1. He was able to get the DVD set-up screen running and communicating with the pc. BTW, that cable is not included. You have to supply it.
2. He also told me that I did have to buy a RF modulator.
3.The DVD firmware update took + 60 minutes to download (via cable). If this happens, you may have a problem.
4. Fourteen (14) hours later, the firmware was still installing!
Another call to the Philippines.
1. The person I spoke to had to be reading from a script. There was no deviation from it when I kept asking about a d/l going badly.
3.When I said I wanted to speak to a technician the reply I got was this: you speak to “me” or you can hang up.
5. Before I did that, I was able to extract (after 5 or 6 try’s) that the firmware d/l and install should only take 30 minutes.
Thank you.
The Samsung was packed up and returned to Best Buy hours later.
I came back home with LG’s “Netflix Ready” Blue-ray player, something I should have done in the first place.
Bought this product in Mid October 2008. It played BluRay disks like a champ. Easy to upgrade the firmware. User friendly was my first thought. After watching BluRay I didn’t want to go back. sometime in December I started playing some regular DVDs. They would not play all the way thru but would freeze or play jerky. Sent it back right after Christmas. Had big time go around with Samsung because their repair depot found “no problem found” because it played BluRay fine which was never the problem! As of today I am told they will refund my money but it’ll take another 3-4 weeks to get it. Buy Sony, Panasonic or anything else!! BTW there are no BD-P2550s at any Best Buy around me. I think the product failed and was pulled or there was so mmany problems with them that Best Buy won’t sell them anymore.
I bought my first blueray player last month, and set it up. I enjoyed 2 movies streamed from Netflix and one blueray movie. I also set it up to run pandora.com. Within a week, I lost the video output, and never got it back. The Geek Squad never showed up (that’s another story) so I took it back to the store, where they tested it with a TV on the floor, to confirm there was no video output. I exchanged it for another player. After I hooked this one up, I was able to watch a blueray disc for 17 seconds before I lost the picture again. In summary, the product is a great idea, but poorly executed; my first and probably my last Samsung product. And now Best Buy doesn’t have anymore in stock. Does anyone no where I can get my hands on a Blueray player that streams Neflix and actually works?
At first I loved this player – Pandora/Netflix/Blu-Ray picture was fine.. but the constant firmware issues plagued my experiance, and to top it off it will not play DVD’s after 6 months of owning it. Or I should say DVD’s play for about 10 minutes and regarless of condition / skip / freeze up. It will play Blu-Ray just fine, and I’ve done all their steps (firmware/updates) even cleaned the lens. Samsung’s fix? Send it in for about a $200 repair. Most likely my last Samsung product.
