HDMI – High Definition Multimedia Interface.
It’s an all digital link from Blu-ray to the receiver. Many of my Blu-ray’s that are coded w/ DTS automatically default to that when I play them. You should be able to set your Blu-ray player to prioritize the audio output to either the HDMI or optical outputs. The analog outputs are the red/white cables that you would hook up in lieu of the digital cables. I could not find the Denon AVR-988 in the Denon web site. It may be a an overseas model not sold here in the U.S. Also, in the dvd menu when you start playing a disc should be a set up menu for the audio. Try switching that around to play back in Dolby instead of DTS if that option is available.
Are you talking about 7.1 analog channel outputs on the back of Blu-ray player ? These are used for connecting to an old receiver ( no DTS-HD MA or Dolby True HD decoder on board ) with 5.1 or 7.1 analog channel inputs to receive analog signal that converted HD sound format into PCM. It is a good thing to enjoy HD sounds without having a HD capable receiver.
