No. They are different branches of technology. They are both similar to DVD players, except they only play each respective type of High Definition DVD (Blu-Ray or HD-DVD). It’s like Betamax and VHS. Similar technology but one is expected to rise above the other.
I think Blu-Ray is higher quality, but HD-DVD is more affordable. Not sure on this one though.
