You Think That The Ps3 System Really Require The Blu-ray Disc Player?
Sony can do us all a favor and remove the Blu-ray player and make it external so we don’t have to shell out $600 right off the bat to play games that really do not use the full potenial of the Blu-ray Disc (ex: Devil May Cry 4, explained later) and movies we would just rather by the DVD than the Blu-ray Disc since they’re all the same (movie-wise, not graphic-wise).
And the reason I say Devil May Cry 4 is that (as most of us know), it has been ported to the Xbox 360 and PC. . . which I believe the Xbox 360 still uses DVDs (or dual-layer DVDs, anyone can correct me on thsi). . . and how I know is that games being played on the Xbox 360 do not required the HD-DVD External Add-on Drive. . . unless I missed something.
If they did that, Sony’s PS3 would have sold well (assuming that removing the Blue-ray player will lower the price down to $450 or 400) and when the time comes for games requiring the Blu-ray disc, we’ll gladly buy the add-on.
The problem with an add-on is that you can’t expect people to buy it when it’s needed; you would have to just release an all-new console. The GTA developers have already mentioned something similar limiting them with the 360–because you can buy a 360 Core without a hard drive, they’re limited in what they can do because they can’t assume that everyone buying they game will have the 360 Premium with the HD. And they can’t just say “Well, you have to have the Premium or the Elite to play this game” because that would do nothing but make people mad.
Yeah, games aren’t using the Blu-ray to its full potential yet, but they will. Did PS2 games use the full potential of DVDs at first? Of course not. Blu-ray isn’t needed, that’s true, but neither are things like rumble, analog control, and 3D graphics. It’s just one more feature that will let developers make better/cooler games if they choose to use it.
The PS3 WOULD sell a lot better if it was cheaper, there’s no denying that. It’s a console that’s way ahead of its time. Then again, so is the 360. Most people still don’t have HDTVs, and $400 is still a lot of money for the average person to spend on a game console. It’s a console for the future in that aspect, but yet still has last-gen features like the use of DVDs and the lack of a hard drive in some models.
Whether or not including Blu-ray was a mistake that’ll cost Sony in the long run, only time will tell.
The PS3 WILL require a Blu-ray player because games are getting bigger and bigger, more and more detailed, so more and more storage space is going to be needed, and that’s where Blu-ray comes in. It’s possible to do a multi-disc game, but that’s not popular with developers and gamers. Developers make less money on multiple disks. Gamers don’t like to get up and switch disks while they’re playing a game.
Look at what developers have to say, and they’ve said that DVD-9 is not going to be enough. For now, it is enough, but Sony isn’t thinking about now, it’s thinking about 3 to 10 years down the road. Look at the PS2. Most games started out on DVD, but more and more games started appearing on DVD, and by now, pretty much all PS2 games are on DVD. Lair is going to take almost the entire 25 gb. And what about Final Fantasy XIII and Metal Gear Solid 4? They’re going to take more than 9 gb.
You can’t depend on gamers to buy the Blu-ray player when games require it. For that matter, you can’t depend on gamers to know that a game requires a Blu-ray player, so imagine how angry they’re going to be when they buy a game that requires a Blu-ray player, put it in their PS3, and it doesn’t work. They can’t return it because it’s already opened.
MS didn’t include the HD-DVD player because MS had a year start on the PS3, and back in 2005, the HD-DVD and Blu-ray battle was still very early, and there was no way for MS to know which format would come out the winner, so MS decided to play it safe, and just use DVD-9. A lot of the 360 games are rather short, wouldn’t you say? This probably has something to do with the DVD-9.
Sony plans on using blu ray for games. Can you imagine if the ps2 had a dvd player add-on when it came out? EVERYONE would eventually have had to buy the add-on and would be upset that they shelled out $300 to have to buy an add-on to play any game.
I’m not sure how old you are — but when the playstation 2 first came out, the games were terrible. They were pretty much ps1 games ported over to the ps2 — still on cd rom format. As time moved on, the games took advantage of the DVD media and now they’re great.
I agree with the blu ray being built-in. But I don’t like the price, so I’m not buying one. If you don’t like the price, just keep your PS2. It doesn’t self-destruct just because a ps3 comes out.
sony is dropping the price next summer, yes its official, and without the bluray the graphics wouldnt be as good
